Estimating the Off-Network Presence of STAA Dimensioned Vehicles on North Carolina Roadways Using CMV Crash Data, 2001-2005

A recent study by researchers at NC State University’s Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) has shown fatal crashes involving combination unit trucks (CUT) in NC for 2005-2009 were more frequent on non-Interstate roadways than on Interstate roadways.  While small carriers (those operating fewer than 10 power units) constituted only 17% of all fatal CUT-involved crashes on Interstate roads, small carriers constituted 36% of all fatal CUT crashes on non-interstate roads. Are the Recession and the Decline in Commercial Motor Vehicle Crashes Related? Is Commercial Vehicle Enforcement More Effective During a Recession?

As you know, ITRE has been supporting the analysis and program evaluation needs of the North Carolina Motor Carrier Enforcement Administration (MCE) for years. A primary function of MCE as well as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is to reduce truck-involved crashes.

During the recent economic downturn/recession, there has been a significant reduction in truck-involved crashes and fatalities. There has been a similar reduction in crashes for passenger vehicles. Can it be that commercial motor vehicle enforcement is more effective during a recession and should therefore be given primary credit for the improvement in safety?

ITRE Seeks to Engage Members of the NC Trucking Association in Charlotte, NC's Desire to Develop a Freight Mobility Plan

On June 16, Dr. Hughes, Director of ITRE's CMV Research Group, made a presentation to members of the North Carolina Trucking Association (NCTA) and to members of the City of Charlotte DOT, representatives of the Centrolina Council of Governments (CCOG), and to representatives of the UNC-Charlotte Center for Transportation Policy Studies.

Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Crash Fatalities in 2010

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released a traffic safety facts sheet that that estimates that 32,788 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2010. This represents a decline of about 3 percent as compared to the 33,808 fatalities that occurred in 2009.
